Always nice to see some good come from a degree at Duke. We like to support folks from our hometown school.

I do recall joining you on some beer appreciation trips in the 1980s. I must admit that, from my first trip to the US I have been a convert to their hoppy ales, served considerably colder than we do in the UK. On subsequent trips the originality and range has been impressive and seems now to have crossed the Atlantic. The main deterrents are the strength and the price which are not conducive to long pub sessions. (drinking responsibly of course).

Being an American, and having a brother in North Carolina, I really enjoyed this article - although I am not a beer drinker myself. (Living in Germany, you might think that I am negligent). My brothers, however, are all dedicated consumers of craft beers, one even keeps them in his wine refrigerator, so I will forward this article to them.

Maruxa Godello, Valdeorras 2024.The Wine Society .£12.50. I was lucky enough to met the producer at the TWS tasting in Liverpool last Saturday.Very good value for money and very good quality.

I have written - what I think! is an entertaining piece on the event as a first comment in Brian Elliott's excellent MidWeek Wines website July 28th.

Where else could us amateurs get to taste 55 exceptional wines connected by people who care?
