Interesting - I had no idea the independent sector was so big there. German supermarkets certainly have a particularly bad reputation among producers…

I do not know about the UK leading German trends on this one. There are 11,000 independent wine merchants in Germany, and, it seems, more all the time. Like the UK, however, the supermarkets, especially the super discounters, sell most of the wine here. Aldi is the largest wine dealer in Germany, and the worst thing about that is that it sets the price expectations.

Thanks for including the supermarket totals. As I was reading I thought: it's great that indies are doing well and without smaller production wines, I'd probably just stop drinking the liquid, but how much of a drop in the larger bucket is 50 bottles of Uruguayan pét-nat?

I am however surprised that the supermarket or other large-venue sales aren't more as they're huge in Spain?

I didn’t have time to drill down into those figures as much as I’d have liked to - I’m not sure if online was included in the total. Indies are certainly a small proportion of the total by volume (or value) but I do think they have an outsized influence. I also think they’re getting better/more interesting as a sector!
